Computer Name Generation

I am trying to generate a simple computer name policy. When i create a new computer object via AR, i want AR to generate PC-0001 and the next computer object PC-0002 and so on. I used the following policysamAccountName = PC-{@counter(4)}cn = %<samAccountName>Every time i create a computer object, the samaccountname and cn are pre populated with PC-0001, but when i click next, i get a corporate policy violation. This is the only policy i have in the OU.

Hi, Tony!

The @counter token isn't valid for regular Property validation&Generation (PVG) Policy.
This token can be used in Alias generation policy and User logon name generation policy.

To automaticaly generate computer names such as PC-0001, PC-0002, PC-003, etc. you have to use script-based policy.

Here is a script sample ( activeroles.inside.quest.com/entry.jspa ). You can use it as a starting point for you solution.

What is the best method to import the script to AR. Each time i try to import it, i get

Adminitrative policy retured an error PCNameScript (49, 63)" If (InStr(strSAMName, Mid(strSAMNameProhibited,i,1)) 0) Then" script compilation error: expected')'

This is just a bug in code.
Some greater & less signs have missed because of technical problem on community site

Do you have an computer name generation example script? This one is for user logon name generation. We are trying to autopopulate the computer name field on PreCreate based on the next available sequence number.
Ex – LLM-L000001. Next machine will be LLM-L000002

You are correct. This script is designed for user accounts, and you can adapt it to computer accounts

How can this be adapted to computer objects? Much of the code examples seem directed at presenting recommended values in the ARS UI. How is name generation/enforcement accomplished when using the SOAP/SPML interface?

It seems that the initial call sets the CN of the computer object and we are unable to change it within the onPreCreate event handler.

Please advise.

(I would recommend) in the code on non-windows side I will put SOAP/SPML call ARS SPML provider to Search for provided Computer$ name. If the call return non-empty value then the name is already in sue and the non-windows side process return end-user back to the UI stating "Error. AD reports that the name is in use. Please specify another one".
